Fall Back in LOVE at Work

ON Point

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and there is love in the air. Whether it is romantic love, platonic love or puppy love, everyone loves love. There are elementary school parties where kids hand out cards and “Be Mine” heart-shaped candies, groups of girlfriends get together to celebrate “Galentine’s Day,” and from flowers to fine dining dates, consumers are expected to spend $27.5B this holiday. Yes, it can be viewed as a manufactured masterclass in how to market a universal feeling and turn it into billions of dollars. However, the truth remains the same…everyone loves love even at work.

Starting a new job is often like starting a new relationship – everything is exciting, passion is at an all-time high, energy levels are skyrocketing, and there is a lot of anticipation about promises and potential. What happens when the honeymoon period comes to an end? When the rose-colored glasses become clearer? When your best-manager-ever gets promoted and now you have a different manager? When your day-to-day responsibilities haven’t changed or progressed in a year? When the promotion that was discussed at your performance review still hasn’t come through? There are more than a million reasons why people fall out of love at work, and that can make everyday feel like an eternity.

If you’re struggling to find that loving feeling, and before you break up with your current job, follow the ON Point Action Plan and rekindle that flame you once felt.

7 Ways to Fall Back in Love at Work

  1. Remember WHY – remind yourself of “why” you do what you do, your passion, purpose, the deeper meaning, impact & difference you’re making big or small

  2. See the Vision – connect with the organization’s greater vision, mission, purpose & core values & focus on the long-term & not the tedious day-to-day

  3. Get Engaged – find your like-minded & like-hearted people at specific employee resource groups, social activities or with community outreach initiatives

  4. Control What You Can – make micro-changes within your control that enable your workday to be more enjoyable, balanced, productive & empowered

  5. Look Around – if you think the grass is greener someplace else, then shop around & compare; you may find a new appreciation for what you have

  6. Dive Into Development – a great way to spark new energy & excitement is by learning something new, developing new skills or taking on a new challenge

  7. Have the Talk – be honest with your manager if you feel you have plateaued, are bored, disengaged, disconnected & brainstorm about solutions & next steps
