Back to School, Back to Work – Part I

Updated: Aug 7

It doesn’t matter how old you are, if you have kids, or are living under a rock – everyone knows that August is a transition month. It signifies the end of one season and the beginning of another. It means that stores are stocked with a fresh supply of notebooks and number two pencils. And, it signals the shift from the lazy days of summer filled with family vacations, beach activities, and a much-needed mental break to alarms blaring in the morning, more rigid routines, and an overall feeling of needing to buckle down and get back to work (and school).

Transitions can be challenging at every age and for a variety of reasons, and sometimes it can feel like an eternity before you’re back in the swing of things and firing on all cylinders. Summer schedules are often more laid-back and fluid, and it can feel like a herculean effort to get back to your A-game.  At ON Point, we know that top performing leaders and professionals do not have the luxury of time when it comes to transitioning back to work and need to hit the ground running after a lengthy PTO or a chaotic summer juggling kids at home.

Follow the ON Point Action Plan throughout the month of August for a 5-part series that will share 35 different tips, tools, and strategies to help set you, and your team, up for success and to get back to work with a bang.

Back to School, Back to Work – Part I

  1. Be Prepared – do the planning & preparation before your vacation to help minimize the chaos on your first day back in the office

  2. Be Updated – spend time getting debriefed & updated about the status of projects & tasks to avoid assumptions & repetitive work

  3. Be Realistic – appreciate the fact that it may take you or other team members a few days or a week to be back at 100%

  4. Be Flexible – understand that everyone’s re-entry process may look different & may be on a different schedule or timeframe

  5. Be Communicative – encourage & engage in open & honest dialogue about schedules, competing priorities & expectations

  6. Be Reminded – tap back into your passion & the parts of your position you love the most & that bring you energy

  7. Be Thankful – reach out & express gratitude & appreciation for the people who covered for you while you were on PTO
